I have fond memories of going to the drive-in movies with my parents on summer nights. We’d drive twenty minutes to a field in the middle of nowhere, Pennsylvania (or so it felt). We’d be dressed in our pajamas, with pillows and blankets in tow.
We’d pop the trunk and fold down the back seats of our sedan (we thought it was so cool to sit in the trunk) and tune to the right radio station just in time for the corny commercials. The first movie was always family friendly, but I tried really hard to …
Alcohol-infused ice pops. Wait, but alcohol doesn’t freeze…right? Actually, Erin Nichols shows that you can with her cocktail-inspired ice pop recipes. The secret? Cook most of the liquor off while retaining the flavor.
I was ecstatic to be chosen as the SKC contributor to review this book! My 21st birthday is in a few weeks, and I have been waiting for this day more than ever. Graduating from college as a 20-year-old really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…especially when you couldn’t legally drink with your friends during college and still can’t drink with them after graduation.
What …
Bet you didn’t see this one coming. Another post about the Fourth of July: recipes for apple pie, mayonnaise-loaded salads and corn on the cob, right? Try Paula Deen for that, SKC has pulled together some twists on summer festive favorites. If you already have a Pinterest board of recipes you’re dying to bring to our nation’s birthday party, you might want to add these.

I’ve never had a mojito I didn’t like and I don’t think this one …
The only thing I really want to do when it’s hot and humid outside is jump into the cool, refreshing ocean and swim until my fingers look like my great-grandmother’s. We are officially in the midst of summer so the hot and humid weather is not going away anytime soon. With extra time on our hands and plenty of available friends, what could be better than throwing a summer party? Except maybe throwing a summer party by a pool, beach, or lake. AND, why not add to all that craziness and make it a themed party - the ultimate summer …
This post is part of the Food Matters Project, a cooking collaboration among participating bloggers. Each week, we will cook a recipe from Mark Bittman’s Food Matters Cookbook, which places an emphasis on mindful and sustainable eating. Follow along with us!
This week’s original recipe for Chocolate-Cherry Panini was selected by Margarita of Let’s Cook & Be Friends. Having studied abroad in multiple countries where Nutella on toast with tea was my go-to breakfast, I know the tastiness of a sweet sandwich. Sweet panini are the grilled cheeses of the dessert world: hot, delicious, melty and oozy with …
In case you didn’t know, small talk now means others semi-jokingly frowning upon your newly acquired Liberal Arts degree. Laughable choices range from least useless: Communications (whatever that means), to most useless: tough choice here, but I’m gonna go with Philosophy. “What can you do with a Liberal Arts degree? Har har har!” I have a whole rant about how critical and creative thinking is what you can do, but something along the lines of ”respect my life choices, goshdarnit” about summarizes it. Sorry for using the “g” word.
But yeah, “go time” is pretty much upon us, …
When my sisters and I were little, Mother’s Day was all about surprising mom. Paige and Lily would tiptoe down the hall to rouse me, the late-sleeping older sister, and we would sneak down to the kitchen, trying our best to keep the old wooden stairs from creaking. A quick brainstorming session around the kitchen island determined what would be on the menu and who was in charge of what. We then scurried about, keeping our volume to the lowest we could muster as to let mom sleep and savor the surprise factor. Any accidental bowl clanking resulted in …
Honestly, most of the time Food Network’s behind-the-scenes snacks and junk food show “Unwrapped” just annoys me. I think it’s too cheerful or something. But as I rather prefer a good molestation-infused marathon of :Law & Order: SVU,” perhaps I just have darkness in my soul, an often-contemplated possibility for so many SVU junkies.
Despite and/or because of this preference, I’ve recently found amusement in creating novelty, name-brand snacks at home. It just makes you feel like you’ve found some secret loophole in the system. “Oreos, pour forth from mine oven! I have the power!” Plus there’s the satisfaction of way less mystery stuff going into your mouth, even if not all your ingredients are necessarily organic.
I wouldn’t say I’m the savviest when it comes to going green, so I usually don’t celebrate Earth Day. But I am a huge fan of using recyclables to make clever, crafty things. So this year, I decided to throw a craft-themed Earth Day party so my friends and I could celebrate by reducing, reusing, recycling and most importantly, getting crafty!
St. Patrick’s Day. The day when suddenly every college student becomes Irish and/or claims to have Irish lineage. I’m on to you people. Typically St. Patrick’s Day falls on finals for me because I’m on the quarter system. But this year, it’s the week before finals, so I get to join in on the festivities.
Growing up, St. Patty’s Day was extremely stressful for me. Why? Because I had to make sure I was wearing green or else I would get pinched and let’s just say as a child I did not have a high pain threshold. I would wear …
