Phoebe’s Southwestern Birthday Buffet

Last year, for my official quarter-life birthday, I wanted to do something big. Being a BGSK-er through and through, that didn’t mean renting out a club and treating everyone to an open bar. It meant feeding my friends lots of food. Duh. To kick things up a notch, I lured a sizable crowd an hour outside the city to my parents’ barn. Since it’s home of the Lapine family Thanksgiving, I knew that the small loft space would only get cozier and more festive when packed with 30 friends or family members, and that the table out there doesn’t feel complete without a massive buffet.

After the epic chili buffet dinner in the country, and the grown-up slumber party that followed, I didn’t feel quite right planning anything too big or special for this year. Being partners in birthday crime, Josh and I will probably just do a joint get-together at a bar (gasp). But if all my friends were in possession of a hovercraft or access to a floo powder network (cough cough, Harry Potter reference), I would magically transport everyone back to the barn, to do the same thing all over again. Here is a recap of the menu, complete with boozy cider, two types of chili, and plenty of birthday cake.

Autumn Brisket and Pumpkin Chili

Vegetarian Black Bean and Sweet Potato Chili

Cornbread Croutons

Crispy Romaine Salad with Green Goddess Dressing

Warm Whiskey Cider
