How To Keep Yourself Entertained in the Kitchen

Posted by on Monday Nov 7th, 2011 | Print

When you’re a working stiff, sometimes it just makes sense to get all your cooking done during one long haul, usually on a Sunday when you have plenty of time. But if you don’t have that perfect suburban set-up when you can watch the Food Network while actually cooking, things can get a little boring. While our stews simmer and our onions slowly caramelize, we rely on our laptops to keep us entertained. Here are some of our favorite things to “do” while our hands are busy chopping celery.

How do you pass the time while cooking? Let us know in the comments section, or join the conversation on twitter, @BGSK #IntelEMP.

From our kitchen, albeit small, to yours,

Cara and Phoebe, THE QUARTER-LIFE COOKS

This post was brought to you in partnership with Intel® who are all about making our lives better (and faster) with technology - today and tomorrow. Since we’re co-dependent with our laptops at every waking moment –that’s how we keep up to date on our food writing, photography, twitter streams, and facebook posts - we appreciate what Intel is doing.

I indulge in revenge fantasies. If I need to calm myself after killing someone, I listen to music. Sometimes I try to do email while waiting for things to cook, but usually this results in everything burning.

I love you two. I’ve been using the cookbook for 4 months now and have become quite popular friends who don’t know how to cook. If they like what I serve, I give them your book; otherwise they’ll become flagrant moochers. Go, big girls!

Jam!! MP3 in hand or laptop blaring. I also like to listen to in the background and/or watch Food Network or Phineas and Ferb :)

Once again, very late! I don’t know how I never got notifs about your comments :( Anywho, I would have to say Alton Brown’s “Good Eats” first, Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa second, anything Triple D w/ Guy Fieri and anything Paula Deen :)

I also use this time to catch up with friends on the phone. I just Put on my headset and talk to my best friend who lives thousands miles away. I get caught up on the drama in her life while making a yummy meal. Double Enriching

I skped with my brother when he was in Iraq this year. I would cook something and get a nice long chat in- although I had to promise him not to tell him what great smells and flavors were coming from my oven, unless I promised to recreate them for him when he came home!

That’s so nice Stephanie. Love that.

Listening to music or Podcasts like NPR Fresh Air and This American Life ..those can get tricky if you are following a recipe b/c if you are a nerd like me I get so engrossed I find it hard to concentrate on a recipe but if you are doing the dishes or making a dish you know really well Podcasts are great…oh and some wine :)

hehe. totally agree!! and yes, wine is sometimes necessary :)

Recently, because don’t have TV, I have been watching shows on my computer. Otherwise, I love listening to music, though I think my all time favorite activity is making up ridiculous songs with my sisters as we all cook together!!!
